You need to choose the right ash vacuum...

Why You Need An Ash Vacuum

Do you need an ash vacuum? Obviously, if you don’t have a fireplace or wood burning stove, the answer to that question is probably not. On the other hand, if you rely on either of those devices for home heating, then you’re definitely going to want to buy one. The simple reason is that a regular vacuum just isn’t up to the task. In fact, if you try to clean out your fireplace or wood stove with a standard vacuum cleaner, you’ll quickly destroy it, and you may even start a fire.

Vacuum reviews in particular offer positive and negative points of insight, all of which are a benefit to you in your search for the right ash cleaner.

Ashes can remain hot for hours, and sometimes days after your last fire goes out. Most standard vacuums are made of plastic components with cloth liners or bags. Both of these are extremely sensitive to heat, and hot ash will melt them, or even set them ablaze. Since your fireplace and/or wood stove is inside, that could quickly spell disaster, as the resulting fire could easily spread out of control.

If you’ve ever tried to use a small broom and a dust pan to clean the ash out of your stove or fireplace, then you know what a battle can be. Sure, you can get the job done with those tools, as long as you don’t mind having a fine dusting of ash over the entire room by the time you’re finished. Doing it by hand is just a wretched mess, and if you’ve ever tried it yourself, once is generally enough to change most people’s minds.READ MORE

Fortunately, you don’t have to risk setting your home on fire, and you don’t have to deal with the mess of trying to clear out the ashes by hand. That’s exactly where the fireplace vacuum comes into the picture, and the reason why it was invented in the first place. It just makes life simpler and easier.

The next question that naturally enters the mind is

“What would the best ash vacuum look like?”

It’s a fair question, and the answer is more complex than you might think. Here are the major features and components you’re looking for, in no particular order:

A Long, Retractable Power Cord

A long cord is essential, because in order to get into all the nooks and crannies where ash can collect, you’re going to have to move about a good bit, and the long cord makes that a simple proposition that will keep you from having to constantly re-position the vacuum itself. You can simply put it where you want it and get to work. The retractable feature makes putting your tools away a snap. That’s a win all the way around.

A Long Hose

This is important for the same reason that the long power cord is important. It simply makes it easier for you to reach all those normally hard to reach places where ash can collect, especially along the hearth if you’re cleaning a fireplace. There’s a bit of a tradeoff here though. The longer the hose is, the more inconvenient the vacuum will be to store, so it’s important that you get a unit with a hose long enough to do the job for you, but not so long that it becomes unwieldy.

Heat-Resistant and Lined With Metal

This should be considered a minimum necessary standard for any ash vacuum worth owning. Unfortunately, there are a few low-priced, low-end ash vacuums that are lacking in this department. There’s good news on that front though, our comparison page  can help you steer clear of those models!

An Aluminum Crevice Tool

This is actually a fair bit more important than most people realize. Ash particles tend to be exceptionally small. They can get into, and in between almost everything. Having a metal crevice tool to root them out is one of the hallmarks of an exceptional ash vacuum cleaner.

Extendable and Multi-Function

The reality is that every ash clean up job is different. Sometimes, you’re going to need more reach than others, and you need an ash vacuum that can shift, change, adjust and adapt to changing conditions. Ideally, that means having at least one extension wand (two would be even better), and the ability to use your machine as a regular vacuum if the need arose, as well as being able to use it in the capacity of a blower. The more of these roles your vacuum can adapt to, the better off you’ll be.

Ash vacuum canister

Canister Size

This is a hugely important consideration, because the last thing you want to have to do is stop (perhaps even repeatedly) during the course of a clean up to empty the ash canister. It needs to be big enough to handle whatever size job your home represents. If it’s not, then you’re almost always better served to delay your purchase and save a little more so you can get the right ash vacuum cleaner for your particular situation. The hassle and inconvenience of dealing with a machine too small to handle the volume of ash that your stove or fireplace produces is just not worth it.

The Motor

As with most any piece of equipment like this, the size of the motor is hugely important. Like the canister, it needs to be big, robust and powerful enough to handle the size of the job that your home represents, but more than that, it needs to be relatively quiet too. You don’t want to go deaf trying to vacuum out the ash from your stove or fireplace!

Ash vacuum castersThis is another feature that’s a lot more important than many first time buyers realize. The truth is that ash is heavy. Sure, the individual particles are light, but when you start packing them into a 3-gallon canister, they can get heavy quickly, and that’s before you take into account the weight of the unit itself. All of that can make an ash vacuum that doesn’t come with casters difficult and cumbersome when it comes time to move it from one place to another. Casters are simply a must-have!

A Full Dust Indicator

Ash is really messy. The last thing you want is to have to keep opening the ash canister just to check to see if it’s full, and time to empty it out. Ideally, you’ll want an LED indicator on the exterior of the unit that lights up when the canister approaches the fill line.

A Robust Filtration System

The very best ash vacuums have a triple filtration system with a true HEPA cartridge. It’s not required, strictly speaking, but in general, this feature is well worth paying extra for. In this setup, the first filter is a metal mesh filter designed to trap hot ash. This filter protects the second filter from ever coming into contact with the hot ash particles which might burn a hole in it or scorch it. The second filter is generally a cloth bag filter that sits atop the canister rim, sealing it out. Finally, the HEPA filter is the third line of defense and it’s designed to catch the smallest ash particles and keep them out of the motor.DeVielleTripleFiltration

A Convenient Way to Clean the Filter(s)

This is another fairly important point that goes back to the mess factor. Ash can be extremely messy, and having a means of accessing the filter to remove and wash/clean is extremely important, because it will help keep the mess to a minimum.

Smart Storage Solutions

Ash vacuum hose storage solutionThe more versatile and robust your wood stove vacuum, the more accessories it’s going to have. That’s the tradeoff. Those accessories are what gives the unit the greater flexibility and multi-role functionality. But that doesn’t do you a lot of good unless the unit is designed in such a way that storing all the components is easy and convenient. Ultimately, that comes down to solid engineering and design and is what separates a decent ash vacuum from a truly great one.

The unfortunate reality is that there is currently no ash vacuum on the market today that has all of these features rolled into one “best ash vacuum.” Because that is the case, it’s important to evaluate exactly what your specific needs are, how important each of these features are to you, and plan accordingly. Our site makes that really easy to do. If you go to our comparison page you’ll find a wide variety of ash vacs listed side by side, allowing you to compare various feature configurations, and make the best decision for you.
